Do I Need a Full AC Installation – or Just a Replacement?

A man is using a digital gauge to check the temperature of an air conditioner.

Having to put up with a faulty AC is incredibly frustrating. As the days get warmer, so do our homes. While an unreliable AC might have been a nuisance in Spring, it's a danger in Summer – especially if you’re an Alabama resident.

Heat and humidity can become intense as the state enters summertime. Having an unstable AC unit can place elderly residents and children at greater risk for heat stroke, so it's incredibly important to have a reliable source of cool air. For homeowners looking to upgrade, they can expect two options; an AC installation or replacement.

While they both guarantee a new AC unit, there are some major differences between the two. Let’s take a look at both options so homeowners can have a better understanding of what they’ll need to ensure reliable, cool air all Summer long.

AC Installation vs. Replacement

AC installations are more extensive than replacements. During an installation, ductwork and wiring is added in addition to the new AC unit. Whereas, in replacements, only the AC unit is replaced.

What is Ductwork?

Ductwork is the way in which air is transported throughout the home. They are part of the overall HVAC system and without them, air cannot be effectively sent to all parts of the home. Similarly, new wiring is added during a full AC installation to ensure that your new unit is able to properly function.

Who Gets an Installation?

AC installations are typically done for newly constructed homes. However, older homes going through renovations or ones with non-functional units may require installments. If the existing ductwork and wiring need to be upgraded, it is likely that a full AC installation will be needed. For some installments, the home’s structure may even be modified to accommodate the changes.

When Are AC Replacements Done?

AC replacements are done for homes that have preexisting and fully functional ductwork/wiring. Unlike an installment, replacements do not require major changes to the home’s ductwork and electrical components. However, slight modifications may be needed for the new AC unit.

Which One is Cheaper?

AC replacements are typically cheaper than installments since fewer materials and labor are required to achieve the final result. Replacements also take about 4 to 8 hours while a full installation can take several days.

What if I Just Want a Replacement?

While installations can be more expensive than replacements, they are necessary. Without functional ductwork, your new AC unit will wear out much quicker since it has to work harder to cool the home. Likewise, proper wiring is important for maintaining the longevity of your AC.

Old or faulty wiring can cause your unit to overheat, which can be costly to fix. Additionally, outdated wiring is a major safety concern. AC units with old or damaged wiring are at a greater risk of igniting electrical fires. Electrical fires can start unexpectedly, putting you and your family at greater risk for injury.

If an HVAC technician determines that your home needs an AC installation, don’t put it off or try to have a replacement done. Faulty ductwork and wiring will exhaust your new system which means you’ll likely have to replace your new system sooner rather than later. If safety is compromised, it's incredibly important that you commit to an installation. No amount of money is worth putting you or your family in danger.

Consult the Professionals

While it’s important to know your options when it comes to AC replacement, homeowners should always consult a professional before making a final decision on repairs. Each home is unique and ultimately, it will come down to the technician’s recommendations on whether or not you will need a replacement or installment.
