Is There Ice in Your AC? Here’s What’s Wrong

If you’ve ever noticed ice in your air conditioning unit, you may be wondering what is causing the issue. It’s important to address the problem quickly to prevent damaging your AC and ensure that your home stays cool during the hot summer months.

In this blog post, we explore the common causes of ice in your AC and what you can do to fix the problem.

Common Causes of Ice in Your AC

There are four common reasons for ice forming in air conditioning units.

  1. You Have a Dirty Air Filter

One of the main reasons why you may be seeing ice on your air conditioning unit is due to a dirty air filter. Your air filter is responsible for removing dust and debris from the air before it enters your AC. When the filter becomes clogged, it restricts the flow of air through the system which can cause the evaporator coils to freeze.

To prevent this from happening, be sure to change your air filter regularly, at least once every 90 days. If it’s still in good condition, you can also wash the dust away with water and mild soap.

  2. Your Refrigerant Level is Too Low

Another reason why you may be seeing ice on your AC is due to low refrigerant levels. The refrigerant is a substance that absorbs heat from your home and carries it outside.

If your AC unit is low on refrigerant, it cannot remove heat efficiently from your home which can cause the evaporator coils to freeze. This is a problem that requires a professional HVAC technician to fix since adding refrigerant to your AC unit requires specialized equipment and knowledge.

  3. Your Thermostat Isn’t Working Properly

A third reason why you may be seeing ice on your AC unit is due to a malfunctioning thermostat. Your thermostat is responsible for telling your AC unit’s compressor when to turn on and off. If your thermostat isn’t working correctly, it may be telling your AC unit to run longer than necessary which can cause the evaporator coils to collect ice.

To fix this problem, you may need to replace your thermostat or have it recalibrated by a professional HVAC technician.

  4. The Evaporator Coil Is Dirty

Finally, you may be seeing ice on your AC unit due to a dirty evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is responsible for removing heat from the air that is blown over it. When the coil becomes dirty or covered in debris, it cannot remove heat as effectively which can cause the coil to freeze.

Address the issue by having your evaporator coil cleaned regularly by a professional HVAC technician.

If you notice ice on your air conditioning unit, it’s important to address the problem promptly to prevent the issue from becoming worse. Be sure to contact a professional HVAC technician as soon as possible to diagnose and fix the issue.
