Time To Replace Your AC? | Here’s What To Expect

Many homeowners dread the day their AC unit needs to be replaced. But with Summer just around the corner, it's the perfect time for Alabama homeowners to consider this option. Especially, before the heat hits. So, what do you need to know before replacing your AC?

Is It Actually Time To Replace Your AC?

There are several factors that need to be considered before replacing your AC.
First, when was the last time you had your AC or HVAC unit inspected? If it’s been a while, then you might want to start with an inspection before discussing a full replacement and installation.

Secondly, how old is your unit?
Most units need to be replaced after 10 to 15 years. If your AC isn’t falling into this category, then there might be an underlying issue that's causing your AC to have problems.

Lastly, how frequent are the problems?
If you haven’t had routine maintenance on your AC, and this is a one-off problem, then a full replacement may not be necessary. If your AC unit is constantly blowing hot air, having breakdowns or overheating, then it may be time for a replacement. The only way to know for sure is to have a professional HVAC technician come out and take a look at your unit.

If your AC unit is regularly maintained, is 10 to 15 years old and has recurring problems, then it's definitely time to consider a replacement.

What To Expect When Getting a New AC Unit Installed?

If your HVAC professional has determined that your AC needs to be replaced, here’s a couple things you can expect:

An initial inspection before installation
: Technicians will evaluate your home to determine the right type of AC unit that is needed for your home. Different parts of the home will be accessed to make this determination.

Some of these factors are:

  • The size of the home
  • The current ductwork of the home
  • How the thermostat will be integrated
  • Where the unit will be located
  • The electrical capabilities of the home

The actual installation:
The old unit will be removed, and later replaced by the technicians. Sometimes, the pad on which the unit lays on, will also have to be replaced. The old indoor evaporators, and coils will be removed and later placed by new ones.

Ductwork will also be adjusted for the new system. Once the new unit and its equipment are installed, diagnostic testing will begin to ensure the new AC unit is working properly. Old units and equipment will be disposed of by the technicians.

Once the installation is complete:
Your technician will walk you through the process of how to use your new AC unit. They can answer any questions you may have, and some companies offer follow-up appointments to check recently installed equipment.

How Long Does an AC Installation Take?

From start to finish, the installation of a new AC unit could take between 4 to 8 hours.

This time depends on several factors:

  • Weather: This can influence the time it takes for an installation to be done. If the weather is bad, it will take longer since technicians are working outside.
  • The type of system replacement: If your AC unit is being replaced with a similar unit, it will typically take less time. However, if your new unit is completely different in terms of function, then it will take much longer.
  • Ductwork: If the ductwork does not align with your new unit, adjustments will need to be made. This can take longer depending on how many adjustments need to be done for the unit to work correctly.

(These are only some of many factors that can influence the time it takes for an installation. It’s best to speak with a technician about your specific installation for a more accurate time estimate.)

What Steps Should You Take After Your AC Unit Is Installed?

You should schedule regular appointments for maintenance, replace your air filters and ensure that your vents are open. If you are having issues with your new AC unit, contact your technician for help.
